Recreating the Atari 2600

Over the past few years I have contemplated using a Spartan 6 FPGA development board that I own to recreate one of the earliest video game consoles to exist, the Atari 2600. First released back in 1977 the Atari 2600 is a couple years older than myself, but by the time I was old enough to play video games the crash of 1983 had already occurred and it was not an uncommon sight to find an Atari 2600 and a handful of games selling for cheap at yard sales.
